Kingswinford Safeway

About Safeway

Built on the remains of Stalling's Farm, Safeway was finally opened by the late Councilor Gwen Homer and Lenny the Lion on the 26th July 1979 (see plaque by old Stalling's Lane entrance). To weary 70's Kingswinford housewives, the stark, angular, red brick structure offered respite from the down market International in High Street and Woolworths' paltry food offering (cooked meats, off the bone, next to the bargain record bin). Everyone else went home with a signed picture of Lenny and a small ska-style lapel badge with a large 'S' on it.

Everything You Want From a Store and a Little Bit More went the jingle and we all cheered.

The carnival that was the opening was whipped up into a frenzy by the announcement that the first customer would win a brand new Mini 850, complete with red and green coachlines. Flags proudly flew over the carpark and prize, which sat for a couple of weeks on a makeshift concrete plinth below until the Bell family from Balfour Road sensationally won it. Still knocking about apparently, look for said coachlines and alien JAT V registration plate.

Store became success story as locals clamored for American-style levels of service, albeit from Blaze Park-style mongoloids in white shirts and bowties and usually, one of your mates' moms. Brash shopping mall door completed the look for the first 10 years until a major refit and expansion programme in the early nineties brought in a cleaner, touchy-feely atmosphere. Out went the old roundels and bold, fuck-off S A F E W A Y sign and in came gay alice Safeway bollocks, a coffee shop and even a bloody garage. Refuse to acknowledge the rebranding as Morrisons.
